D: »Pojem, skovan v dvajsetih letih, delno v povezavi s poskusi (nekatere med njimi je sponzoriral Paul Whiteman), da se jazz poveže z oblikami (klasične glasbe), s tem pa je predhonik third streama. Prizadevanje se je pojavilo, še preden se je jazz kot takšen identificiral, tako da obstaja določeno število del, kot npr. Appalachia (1896, rev. 1903) s podnaslovom ‘Variacije na staro suženjsko pesem’ Fredericka Deliusa, ki odkrivajo živ vtis idioma ameriške pesmi in plesa. Lahko bi rekli, da se je simfonični jazz začel z Gershwinovo opero Blue Monday (1922), čeprav se v enakem obdobju pojavi vrsta podobnih del …, med njimi dva baleta – Stvarjenje sveta (1923) Dariusa Milhauda in Within the Quota (1923) … Cola Porterja … Kljub temu je Blue Monday spodbudil Whitemana, da je naročil Rapsodijo v modrem (1924), brez dvoma najslavnejšo skladbo simfoničnega jazza. Gershwinova dela, ki so ji sledila, npr. Klavirski koncert (1925) in … Porgy in Bess (1935), lahko prištevamo k vrhuncem gibanja.« (‹GRJ›, II, 509)
