D: »Splošen naziv za skupino enoglasnih elektonskih instrumentov, ki jih je za uporabo v mikrotonalitetni glasbi razvil Jőrg Mager v Berlinu med letoma 1921 in 1928. Prva verzija je temeljila na oscilatorju s 50 kHz … Frekvenca … se je nadzorovala z ročajem …, ki je omogočal le glissando … Instrument se je prvotno imenoval elektrofon … Leta 1922 je Alois Hába napisal nekaj krajših skladb za sferofon … Drugo verzijo sferofona so demonstrirali leta 1926 in zanj je Grigorij Mihajlovič Rimski-Korsakov napisal nekaj etid … leta 1928 je Mager zamenjal ročaje na sferofonu s konvencionalno klaviaturo in tako je nastal klaviaturni sferofon … Popolnejši trimanualni model klaviaturnega sferofona je konstruiral Mager v Darmstadtu leta 1930. Verjetno je to bil prototip njegovega prvega partiturofona.« (‹GRI›, III, 436)

KR: V D je sporno obravnavanje s. kot »splošnega pojma«, saj za vse verzije Magerjevega s. obstajajo posebni nazivi (v D ni omenjen kaleidofon!). Iz tega razloga elektrofon, kaleidofon, partiturofon in s. vendarle niso sopomenke.
