PROSTA IMPROVIZACIJA = SVOBODNA IMPROVIZACIJA

ANG: free improvisation; NEM: freie Improvisation; FR: improvisation libre; IT: improvvisazione libera.

D: Naziv za vrsto skupinske improvizacije, ki poteka brez zapisanega podlage. Namesto tega se večinoma uporablja načelo ustnega dogovora med sodelujočimi pri improvizaciji.

KR: V D 2 improvizacije se opozarja na to, da se improvizacija v jazzu od p. i. razlikuje »le v smislu izvedbenih klišejev« v free jazzu in jazzu. Kot je vidno iz D free jazza, se »izvedbeni klišeji« tu vendarle uporabljajo, vendar nasprotno od slogovnih konvencij bebopa. V D 3 intuitivne glasbe Stockhausen zatrjuje, da se v p. i. včasih presegajo meje »kakšnega glasbenega jezika«, vendar svojo intuitivno glasbo preferira tudi pred p. i. V D 4 improvizacije se omenja »model v spominu glasbenika, ki improvizira« (ali »pisno določena … naloga«), kot pogoj za glasbeni pomen improvizacije.

P. i. se pomensko zoperstavlja nadzorovani improvizaciji, vendar je ta pojem nesmiseln, ker so kriteriji nadzora v njem povsem nejasni (gl. D in KR nadzorovane improvizacije).

Pojem v smislu D ima jasen pomen, če se kot kriterij omejitve vzame neobstajanje zapisa. Upoštevati moramo tudi to, da pomena pojmov, kot sta skupinska improvizacija in kolektivna improvizacija, temeljita na drugačnih kriterijih od p. i. in zatorej ni nujno, da gre za sopomenki.
