ET: Srednjeveško lat. clavis (množina: claves) = tipka, (-e), iz lat. clavis = ključ. Razvoj pomena iz srednjeveške latinščine lahko pojasnimo s funkcionalnim dojemanjem tipk na glasbilu: tipke (claves) so rabile za odpiranje in zapiranje dotoka zraka na orglah. Pozneje se je pomen razširil na vsa glasbila, na katerih tipke vzbudijo nihanje strun. (‹KLU›, 375).
