D: »(Naziv za) slog v popularni glasbi kubanskega porekla. Razvil se je v štiridesetih letih iz elementov conjunta, plesnih bendov z glasovi in trobentami v backgroundu in s kongami in bongosi ter iz charang, v katerih so flavte in violine igrale melodije iz plesov evropskega porekla, npr. danzòn. V štiridesetih in petdesetih letih so se glasbeniki, ki so igrali salso, preselili v … New York, kjer se je slog delno pomešal z jazzom. Salsa je na ta način zadobila slog swinga …, latinski jazz pa se je razvil kot kombinacija struktur jazza in ritmov salse. V šestdesetih in sedemdesetih letih se je salsa vrnila h kubanskemu slogu, saj so izvajalci mešali instrumentacijo conjunta in charange na način, da so v conjutu trobente zamenjali s pozavnami. Uvedli so tudi portoriške in nove latinskoameriške elemente. Ritmi salse temeljijo na afroameriških plesih, kot so bolero, cha-cha-cha, guanguancò, mambo in son montuno.
