D: »(Naziv za) sakralni žanr oz. za njemu pripadajoči način petja cerkvenih pesmi črnih ameriških protestantov, ki je nastal v tridesetih letih, osnovan na negro spiritualu, ter pod vplivi jazza. Gospel se je najprej izvajal med mašo, in sicer po responzorijalnem načelu, tako da so verniki z improvizacijami odgovarjali duhovniku. Potem so gospel začeli skladati in pogosteje izvajati solistično, na koncertih, ob spremljavi manjšega instrumentalnega ansambla, torej zunaj mašnega obredja.« (‹HI›, 185; ‹RAN›, 3345).

KM: Ekvivalenti AN izvirnika v NEM, FR in IT,so ponujeni kot razlage izvirnika v ‹BR›, 234–235.

V ‹FR›, 35, je naveden nenavaden in redko uporabljan izraz »gospel jazz«: »(Naziv za) jazz, ki temelji na gospelu.«

KR: V slovenščini se g. običajno uporablja kot krajšava za »gospel song«. Prevod »gospel pesem« ni običajen. Včasih se o gospelu govori kot o sakralni pesmi ali cerkveni popevki, vendar je to napačno, ker je cerkvena pesem (ali popevka) pojem z veliko širšim pomenom kot pa je gospel.
