KM: D 2 iz ‹RAN›, 628, je navedena pri geslu »faziranje« (»phasing«), medtem ko sam Reich uporablja f. p. npr. v tem kontekstu: »če kakšno število posameznih tonov pulzira v istem tempu, vendar s postopnim pomikom v razmerjih med fazami, bomo dobili veliko število glasbenih obrazcev. Če bi bili vsi toni v fazi (to je, če bi se zaigrali sočasno), bi slišali pulzirajoči akord. Če bi se toni počasi pomikali malo izven faze, bi se slišala neka vrsta valovito »razlomljenega« akorda, ki bi se postopoma zamenjal v melodični obrazec, nato bi se slišal drugi takšen akord itn. Če je proces faznega pomika dovolj postopen, postajajo slišne majhne ritmične razlike. Slišalo bi se, kako se dani glasbeni obrazci spreminjajo v druge brez spremembe višine tona, barve ali intenzitete in bi se tako vključili v glasbo, ki deluje izključno s postopnimi spremembami v času.« (REICH 1974: 17)
