D: »(Naziv za) podzvrst New Orleans jazza, ki se je razvil med mladimi belimi glasbeniki (Jimmy McPartland, Dave Tough, Frank Teschemacher, Joe Sullivan, Bud Freeman, Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa, Muggsy Spanier, Eddie Condon, Pee Wee Russell, Red McKenzie in drugi) iz okolice Chicaga v zgodnjih devetdesetih letih. Na začetku se je preprosto kopiral slog New Orleans jazza Kinga Oliverja …, vendar se je kmalu uvedla nova instrumentalna tehnika (Goodman) s strastno, prodorno ritmično osnovo (Krupa), skupaj z močnejšim poudarkom na solih. V glavnem je šlo bolj za variiranje osnovnih značilnosti New Orleans jazza kot za razvijanje kakšnega novega, neodvisnega sloga …V poznih devetdesetih letih so se številni glasbeniki preselili v New York, kjer so nakateri med njimi postal glavni protagonist sloga swing.« (‹GRJ›, I, 206)

KM: V ‹HI›, 90, je omenjeno, da je C. j. pripravil prehod z old time jazza na swing.

KR: Slovenski prevod je zlasti dobeseden: čikaški jazz; ni pa priporočljiva raba »jazz iz Chicaga«, saj v njem niso dovolj izražene specifične slogovne značilnosti, ki jih razumemo v izvirniku.
